Carrying this over from a previous thread. Most christian faiths , if not all, condemn abortion as a mortal sin. My question is - does that universally hold true in cases where the mother will die in childbirth?
For ease of argument, and yes, I fully acknowldge that this is an extremely unlikely scenario, lets assume a few things for the points of this discussion: 1.) The doctors are certain that the mother WILL die if she gives birth. Either she has an extremely bad heart condition, some physical deformity that would prevent a birth or some other medical condition. 2.) The child would not survive whether the mother chooses to give birth or not. Now, in this admittedly far-fetched scenario, where the dcotor says to the mother "if you attempt to have the child, both you and the child will die or, if you abort the pregnancy, you will live" - would it be wrong to have an abortion in that case? I ask because it occurs to me that its sort of a lose lose situation with regards to one's soul isnt it? By choosing to carry the baby to term, the woman is, in effect, committing suicide , and thereby commiting a sin. And if she aborts the baby its also a sin. Is this a no-won scenario, or does the mother get a free pass if she chooses to die and says "well its up to God to decide?" Im not 100% sure where I would be if it were the potential mother of my child, but Im fairly sure Id vote for keeping one of the two of them alive. No one can be sure of course what they would do until they are in that position - but Id be curious what everyone else thinks...
