I don't know if I'd call it hate (but I'm sure there are some that really do feel that way) but more like complete irritation and suprise. That kind of reaction is almost expected when it looks as if a person totally changed overnight. Its as if you turned into a cockroach right in front of our eyes - we are still wrapping our heads around "Whoa, ****, a cockroach!" while you've already moved on with things.*

LFG, I know I can be a complete jerk, esp. on "the other board", but whatever I say isn't out of hate for you as a person. Its just me calling out bull**** as I see it.

*Bonus points if anyone knows where the cockroach referance comes from.

I skimmed through the other replies in this thread, and I didn't see anyone else mention this yet:

James 1:12 says:
"Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him."

John 15:18-21 says:
"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me."

So rejoice in persecution, because it re-affirms that you are not of this world and Jesus has chosen you out of the world, and you will receive the crown of life that God has promised you.

in my experience, responding truthfully and clearly to these types of people just results in a time sink. As this is my first post, I might want to say that I am not outright religious, but I'm struggling with a religious gf, and that kinda stuff.

However, I was a member of a fraternity, and our charter, as did most others on campus(Oregon State University) assumed that we were all religious, Christians specifically, and so of course several of our members were Christian.

So issues like these come up:
mainstream religion is unpopular
So many holes in the bible...etc

Well, the most effective answer is that your religion WILL allow you to ignore these fools. You are communing with God, and they are the unwashed masses of sheep following the public eye.

However, we all know that's not possible. Instead, think back to high school or a similar situation. Back then, I was hot ****.-- But people as a whole didn't ridicule me any less. What was the difference? Well, it was because life was so good, I didn't give a flying **** what these people thought. So I just paid no attention to them.

Now making them stop is a different matter. In my experience, the most effective way is to maintain a somewhat satirical air. Agree with them in some cases: " Yes, I know I'm a sheep, but wouldn't it be a shame if all this bible nonsense was true? You'd be ****ed."
Or anything similar-- Mind you- as each situation is different, each response must be. First of all, be true to your faith and don't be discouraged.
